April 24 Happy Hen Farms Newsletter:
This week, I decided to continue to update you all on the chicks and ducks, as well as the progress of the plants!
So, this Wednesday will be week-two for the chicks, and it will be week-three for the ducklings. I managed to get the ducklings already a week old from Dunlap Hatchery, which was an added plus!
Considering last week's post showcasing the new arrivals, they all have grown considerably. A majority of the chicks already have all their wing and tail feathers grown in, and are starting on their back feathers. It seems like every year, the chicks grow faster than the previous year, especially when it comes to feathering out. Part of the reason may be because of improved genetics within the breed itself, or feed, or maybe I'm getting really good at providing an environment that they excel in; or maybe all the above!
As you can see in the picture above, the peas have grown considerably from a few weeks ago. I planted about another 35 ft row of them last weekend, and they are starting to sprout, so within about a month and a half, there will be snap peas available!
Here's a little video showing them running around and (attempting) to fly. They are pretty entertaining to watch, to say the least.
We cannot forget about the "big-chickens." After all, they deserve most of the credit for making the eggs that end up on your table, but also for financing those chicks and ducks. A joke I always make about the chickens is that, "chicks aren't cheap!"
