April 17 Happy Hen Farms Newsletter: New Chicks & Ducks!

Good Evening, 

I hope everyone had as good and as blessed Easter as could be had this year! 

This week, I will be coming to the school's parking lot on Friday from 2:00-2:30. I will be parked in the left hand side of the parking lot in a white Honda Civic. 

Eggs: 

To start the week off, I have about 8 Large dozen, and about 12 Md dzn. By Thursday, I should have about 40 total dozen available. As far as egg production goes, it's been consistent at about 7 dozen per day. I have been alternating the chickens between eating grass, and alfalfa pellets, in order to give the grass a break, as it is a crucial time to get the grass established for this season.

 The place that I buy all of my feed and feed ingredients from [Big D Feed] offers all sorts of different ingredients. The alfalfa pellets are manufactured in Middleton, ID. I think it is kind of "cool" that all the grain, hay, ect... at Big D Feed, is all sourced from growers in Idaho.

Speaking of "local," the place that I buy chicks from is also a local business in Caldwell, ID [Dunlap Hatchery]. They are a hatchery that has been around for 102 years, and I have been buying chickens from them for 5 years. Last Wednesday, I bought 25 chicks, as well as 5 ducks (why not?). 

  

The ducks were already a week old when I got them, which was an added plus! Depending on how they do, I might get some more later this spring. They are pretty cute, and are really nice to all the other chicks, who are about 4x's as small as the ducks are. All the chicks think that they are ducks now, and they all follow the ducks around in a little group.
